I was inspired by a post on a design blog, and it just happened to be a dear friend's birthday. I made a birthday box, with everything needed to throw a party.
Here are the steps:
First you must obtain a box. I happen to have a good friend in the pastry business and was able to get a cake box. My suggestions: make a friend at a bakery, or stealthily steal a doughnut box from Safeway. My box was white but I wanted a more "organic" feel so I folded the box the opposite way, which turned the brown cardboard inside to the front.
Next, decide what you want your party box to incorporate. I decided on cupcakes.
Once you have the theme, go with it. I went with polka dots and primary colors. I bought napkins, plates, plastic forks, cupcake liners, cupcake mix, a crown (for the birthday girl), invitations and thank you notes, candles and sprinkles. Everything you might need should be included!
I took the cake mix out of the original box (tacky) and put it in a re-closeable bag (a coffee bag) which made it look homemade and cute. Remember to copy the other added ingredients and directions from the cake box onto a card!
I also hate sprinkle containers. I drained an airplane bottle of vodka, removed the label, created a new one, and put the sprinkles in that instead of the oddly shaped, ugly, plastic container sprinkles normally come in.

I finished it off by putting a colorful ribbon on the top and using typewriter script with sharpie to write "happy birthday"

Everything would have been perfect if I didn't have to look for parking for 30 minutes, walk in the rain for 6 blocks and lose the ribbon on the way to the party, but...whatever!
